In Step With . . .Samantha Ransier

Mat Instructor Samantha Ransier owes her love of Tae Kwon Do to her younger sister. “I started because my sister sparked my interest,” she states. “I had always thought martial arts were cool, but when I saw Master Morgan doing a self-defense demonstration at a birthday party, I was automatically hooked,” she continues. Four years later, Samantha enjoys working at the Fayetteville location, and is a first-degree black belt.

Here’s more on April’s instructor, Samantha Frazier.

Did you have any problems/issues that Tae Kwon Do helped you overcome?

I was always very socially anxious, but Master Shim's has taught me to use my voice in multiple ways.

What has Tae Kwon Do done for your confidence? Self-esteem?

There is nothing more confidence boosting than watching other people trying just as hard and encouraging you no matter how little you think of yourself. I personally had a group of students that I bonded with and became very close with. We did everything together at Tae Kwon Do. They helped me become more confident.

Is it good exercise?

Definitely. There is always a balance between the physical training and the curricular training which let's you develop not only muscular strength, but also your flexibility.

What changes have you seen in students who take Tae Kwon Do? Why would you recommend it to others?

There are tremendous changes! I think one of my personal observations was how children who come into the door on the first day with the jitters, unable to keep still, and running from place to place, walk in the door, bow politely and respectfully grab their cards and sit patiently by the mat. Another change is watching the shy children finally expressing themselves and flowering into amazing martial artists with more confidence than ever before.

Anything else you would like to add?

Master Shim's has made me a better person. I focus more in school and have a higher self-image. I love the amazing family I've become a part of. I could never be happier anywhere else.

Love The Skin You Are In

Friday, May 11th, 2018

At the first peak of warm weather, many people excitedly flock to the beach. After all, winter’s blistering temperatures have held outdoor activities at bay for months. The squishy sand between your toes, refreshing cool water waves, and sunshine on your skin create an attractive allure to take a beach day. As much fun as frolicking in the sun can be, it can develop into too much of a good thing. May is Skin Cancer Awareness month. Instead of shying away from time in the sun and the benefits that it can bring, the key is to do it wisely. Taking appropriate precautions ensures your time in the sun is safe.

  • Use sunscreen. That’s what it’s for. Allow it to help keep the harmful rays at bay.
  • Don a pair of sunglasses. They’re not only stylish, they’re functional. They serve a valid purpose in helping your eyes.
  • Limit your time in the sun between 10am and 4pm. When temperatures are often at their highest, and the sun’s rays are the fiercest, consider cutting back on outdoor time. Don’t make a practice of laying out for hours on end.
  • Try to wear clothing that coves your skin whenever possible. Long-sleeved shirts and long pants can provide protection from damaging rays. Of course, it’s hot in the summer, so tank tops and shorts are an integral part of your wardrobe. But when you may be outdoors for extended periods of time, consider covering up to protect your skin.

Moms – We Love You!

Thursday, May 10th, 2018

“Motherhood: All love begins and ends there.”

  • Robert Browning

Indeed, a mother’s love is unconditional. Mom is there to celebrate every victory and cheer you on through each challenge. She’s there to hold you and encourage you if you encounter a struggle and rejoice when you have a triumph. Of course, with that in mind, you want to take Mother’s Day to honor all the ways she has enriched your life. From tried and true methods to gifts that are outside of the box, here are a few ideas every mother is sure to enjoy.

Flowers and candy

You’d be hard-pressed to find a woman who doesn’t feel special when given colorful flowers. Couple that gift with something sweet for your sweet, and it’s sure to bring a smile to Mom’s face. Chocolates almost always do the trick. And if you’d like to give her a whole field of flowers, head to Atlanta Botanical Gardens to savor nature’s beauty.

Music to my ears

The Fox Theatre is the location for a Mother’s Day Weekend Celebration, with the vocal stylings of the one and only Anita Baker. Enjoying music she loved years ago may be a joyous walk down memory lane for Mom. Add more excitement to the evening with a special brunch or dinner event at a number of area restaurants.

So happy together

Mommy & Me Days at Master Shim’s World Class Tae Kwon Do provide a gift idea that is unique, off the beaten path, and something you and mom can enjoy together. Take part in the in a bonding time that will also give you a good workout! As Mom embodies the new sense of confidence and power that Tae Kwon Do can bring, surprise her with a gift certificate to come back for classes. That is surely a gift she’ll never forget.

Heart Healthy – Bring A Friend!

Monday, April 30th, 2018

Healthy Heart, Healthy You

According to heart.org, less than 30% of high school students perform enough physical activity to keep their hearts healthy.

Less than 30 percent. Sadly, there are so few people taking advantage of the simple steps you can take to help your heart.

The American Heart Association recommends at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous aerobic activity daily. In honor of American Heart Month, here are a few simple, practical and beneficial things you can do to get your heart healthy – and keep it that way.

Eat a heart healthy diet. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables, along with whole grains, is just what the doctor ordered. Increasing foods that are good for you, while simultaneously decreasing your intake of sugary drinks, sodium and saturated fats, paves a path to keep your heart happy.

Maintain a healthy weight. Eating foods that are good for you not only keeps your heart happy, but your waistline too. Keeping your weight at a level that’s healthy for you is about so much more than looking good. It’s about feeling good, and truly being in good shape. Which leads to another way you can help your heart.

Physical activity. This is where Tae Kwon Do comes in. In addition to being an activity that’s fun and engaging, it offers an excellent workout. Tae Kwon Do gets your entire body moving, from head to toe.

These simple but powerful tips, along with healthy levels for your cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure, can go a long way to helping you live a long and healthy life.

Head over to Master Shim’s and get signed up for one of the most exciting workout regiments around. Your heart will thank you for it.

And it’s not too late to take advantage of this week’s Special Friend Classes, April 30th-May 5th!

Camp Fun in the Summertime

Camp Fun in the Summertime

Lazy days at the beach. Trips to the park and the playground. Taking time to lounge and read a book. The carefree days of summer will soon be upon us. While the kids will no doubt enjoy some down time, they may soon crave a little activity to keep them, well, active. Enter summer camps. Combining mental, emotional and sometimes physical benefits, summer camp can be the perfect outlet for your child.

Summer camp can bring children from different neighborhoods, ages and socio-economic backgrounds together. It is the perfect opportunity to learn how to socially interact with interesting people from all walks of life. Children can become more adept at communicating and participation with a wider group of people. Perhaps, among children they don’t see on a daily basis, your child may have the opportunity to exhibit more leadership skills that may be hidden among their normal group of friends.

Depending upon the type of camp your child is attending, they can develop greater skills of responsibility and resourcefulness as well. Camps may require them to take on certain tasks, find ways to solve problems, and address specific issues. Their team or group may depend upon them to get their part done. And because it won’t have the stigma of being schoolwork, it may be viewed as a more fun or challenging endeavor.

Along those lines, your child can learn a new skill. Again, cloaked in fun and summer activities, they won’t even realize that some actual education has taken place.

This list is by no means exhaustive. With camps featuring everything from computer skills to cooking, dance to martial arts, the list of additional benefits is endless. In fact, Master Shim’s World Class Tae Kwon Do offers a summer camp experience like no other. Filled with activities, learning and field trips, it’s sure to bring delight to them – and you. Stay tuned to www.atlantatkd.com for all the camp details.

The Art of Competition

Friday, April 20th, 2018

The Art of Competition

Everybody is a winner.

Countless parents use that mantra to encourage their children, when it comes to competition. After all, it can be difficult for children to experience loss, or not capture first place. But competition is definitely not all negative. In fact, good, healthy competition can be beneficial for children physically, mentally and emotionally.

Physically, children can learn new skills, and want to improve upon them. The person who wins a competition did something right – leading to the victory. If your child is not the victor, what a great starting point for lessons they can learn and grow from.

Mentally, your child can learn to win – and lose – gracefully. A winner who doesn’t handle their success gracefully is not enjoyable to be around. Conversely, a sore loser is just that – a sore loser. Competition provides the opportunity to learn how to handle both situations.

Emotionally, competition can improve your child’s self-esteem. Just having the sense of accomplishment can make a world of difference to a child. Completing a task, finishing a game, or entering a contest can be a positive goal they’ve met and completed.

In addition to considering these valuable points for your child’s next competition, you can see them in action. Don’t miss Master Shim’s 12th Annual World Class Open Championship on Saturday, April 28.
